Howard Payne Hopeful of College Football Playoff Berth

All the Howard Payne Yellowjacket football team can do this weekend is sit and wait, hope and pray, and maybe, just maybe the stars will align and the Yellowjackets will receive a birth in the first ever College Football Playoff. The Yellowjackets are coming off their best season in some time, going 4-6, but it’s not about the record, it’s about the quality of the losses that the team encountered that could put them in the playoff. HPU alumni Clinton Mesburger explained that because HPU lost to the #2 team in the country, that gives them a quality loss that most others do not have. “We lost to Mary Hardin Baylor, who was #2 at the time, by a score of 84-13. We don’t know if Alabama or Oregon could have played them closer because they didn’t play.”

The Howard Payne football team wrapped up their season on November 15th with a 61-20 loss to Sul Ross State University in Alpine. “The air is so dry in Alpine we just never felt like we could compete in that type of atmosphere,” explained Mesburger. Since that loss, the Yellowjackets have hired a public relations firm to state their case for a birth in the College Football Playoff. “We didn’t play TCU, so we can’t argue that we beat them by 3, but we can argue that we lost to Mary Hardin Baylor by 71.”

When asked about the teams ability to match up with a team like Alabama, Mesburger said he feels confident that his Yellowjackets wouldn’t be intimidated. “If anything, playing at Gordon Wood Stadium I feel adequately prepares us to play in a stadium like The Sugar Bowl or The Rose Bowl. I mean, it doesn’t get much more historical than The Rose Bowl and Gordon Wood Stadium. Where has Alabama played?”

The College Football Selection will be announced Sunday night, and members of the YellowJacket football team are spending their Saturday trying to hook up a Direct TV satellite dish to the jumbotron at Gordon Wood Stadium for a watch party. Mesburger said that a couple of the pixels are out on the screen, but other than that, they are excited and hopeful that the community will come out and support them Sunday evening.
