Celebrate Brownwood billboards draw controversy

A recently commissioned series of billboards to be posted in San Angelo, Abilene, and Waco to encourage individuals to move to Brownwood is being met with extreme hostility by many in the community. “I guess we were too honest, but mama taught us never to lie to people” stated TSTC Freshman John Zapata. Zapata is, of course, referring to the “Brownwood 2014” series of billboards. These billboards sardonically cast Brownwood in a negative light according to elder statesmen and residents of Brownwood, many of whom do the same thing their family did and their family has been doing the same thing since antiquity. “For the college aged students, the jaded young adults, and anyone in their right mind who views Brownwood as it really is and not though rose tinted glasses, the billboards are clear” Zapata emphatically stated. The Brownwood Billboard Consortium has pulled all support for Zapata’s billboards.

The Examiner, in a rare editorial decision (and because we are lazy), will simply post the images sans commentary and let our viewers decide.

"I'd rather them play bingo than drink and watch Matlock, but that's just me"

"Things people in Brownwood like"

Zapata admits he stole this joke from another meme, but it's "even more Brownwood appropriate, especially since the bus doesn't stop here anymore"

"Ok, so it's technically 30, but Center is really narrow. Visiting downtown would mean people would be stuck in Brownwood longer than they need to be"

"I thought this would encourage more workers to come to Brownwood, but then I remembered half the people here won't work and the jobs are filled by H1-B applicants.. so I made sure to let them know the pay stinks"

The city might actually approve this one, Zapata states.

  1. Surely this is a joke! To me it looks like we are a boring town & want drunks & drug users to come here!! Unacceptable advertisement!!!! Please do not use negative comments to tell others about our town. We have a lot of positive things going on here, use these good things about our town. Most of us do not drink beer or use meth! Positive points about Brownwood–HPU, Lyric Theatre & Lyric Theatre of Performing Arts, new skating rink, lake, Heartland Mall, Regal Cinema 8, Commerce Shopping Center, Bwd Coliseum, Train museum, museum at old jail, restored depot, library, bowling alley, Academy of Freedom, parades downtown (with many restored buildings), New Sports complex (Gordon Wood stadium, baseball fields, soccer fields, Bowie swimming pool), Riverside Park (+ new RV park), Coggin Park, Festival Park, Wiggins pool, Wiggins Park, & Industrial Park. Please use these points.
