Local Man Admits to Shopping at Wal-Mart, Local Support Group Formed

Local resident Luther Day has admitted that he shops at Wal-Mart.  “Like everyone else, I denied it publicly for years.  I repeated the mantra ‘Oh I hateWal-Mart.  I only go there if I just have to.’  But the truth is, I shop there every day of the week and twice on Sunday.  Unless the Dallas Cowboys are playing, then only once on Sunday.  Or I made excuses like ‘I’m only here to get such and such for my ailing mother, and you can’t find it anywhere else.’ It’s really a said situation.”

Day said that when he went to Wal-Mart he would always see friends and neighbors.  “But as our filled-up carts passed, they would look away or look down at the floor, not acknowledging me and denying their own presence in Wal-Mart. I just finally decided this is silly.”

Day, who denies that he is kin to anyone else named Day in Brownwood, has formed a support group called Wal-Mart Shoppers Loud and Proud.  “Well, Wal-Mart shoppers are a pretty loud bunch, by and large, so I guess that part of the name was not necessary, but there it is.”

The group meets once a month in the Tire & Lube Express.  “Everyone has to stand up and say ‘My name is So-and-So and I shop at Wal-Mart.’  Then we all tell our stories about how we denied it and tried to hide it for so long, and how we all deal with it now.  It has been very helpful for so many people.”

Day points out that he does occasionally go to local merchants too.  “But mostly just when I need a donation.  Like for our volunteer fire department, or my kid’s baseball team, stuff like that.”
