On Friday, the Brownwood Lions football team will make the 9 mile trip west to Bangs where they will scrimmage the Bangs Dragons and the Comanche Indians in a ménage à trois type format. The scrimmage should certainly prove a mighty challenge for the Lions, and we commend Coach Howard for setting up such tough scrimmage opponents.
The Lions will play 6 teams ranked in the top 25 in the Pigskinprep class 4A Division 1 Preseason Poll (Alvarado #21, Big Spring #16, Abilene Wylie #10, Liberty Hill #8, Graham #3, and Stephenville #1). Lion fan Todd Simmons shared his appreciation for the tough scrimmage opponents, “playing a team like Bangs or Comanche should really show us what to expect when we face off against Stephenville. But playing both Bangs and Comanche on the same day should really prepare us for anything we may encounter this season.”
It isn’t everyday that the Lions get to play a team as intimidating as Bangs. “I mean, their mascot is the dragons. As if one dragon isn’t scary enough, we’re playing multiple mythical creatures,” added Simmons. “I remember back just a few years ago we were playing and beating Abilene High, Abilene Cooper, San Angelo Central and Odessa Permian. I’m glad to see us get some tougher competition in here. Bangs is such a large school, I don’t know if we have any business playing them.”
Comanche should also present plenty of problems for the Lions. They’re a large school with big boys. Simmons added, “they fell in the playoffs last year 31-26 against Bangs, so we know they’ll be out for revenge in this scrimmage.”
The scrimmage at one time was planned to take place at Gordon Wood Stadium, but due to the stadium’s urinals being named “Worst in Central Texas,” the scrimmage was moved to Bangs to allow for a plaque to be hung in the men’s room. (See Urinal Story Here)
