Howard Payne picked Second to Last in Football

The ASC Coaches and Media preseason polls are in, and in a rare occurrence, the Howard Payne Yellowjackets are not picked to finish last in the American Southwest Conference division football play for the 2014 season. Excitement could not be higher across the campus. Incoming freshman and Early High School graduate Kenneth Sampson shared his excitement, “I’ve never been a part of a student body on a campus that didn’t finish last in football. I’m so excited to get this season started. The experts picked us to beat Sul Ross State!”

Sampson went on to say that expectations are very high for this year’s group, but he knows not to let expectations get in the way of what actually happens. “One year at Early I remember some magazine or someone picked us to beat somebody in our district, and everyone was excited. That didn’t happen, and everyone was depressed. We had scheduled a bonfire and everything to celebrate, but then everyone was depressed. I hope that doesn’t happen here.”

Mary Hardin-Baylor is picked to win the conference with rival Hardin Simmons coming in in third place. Louisiana College is predicted to challenge Mary-Hardin Baylor for the conference title. In a phone interview with Mary Hardin-Baylor student Patrick Holmes, Holmes told us that the school is not overlooking Howard Payne. “We are aware that they’ve improved and aren’t picked last anymore. They scored a few touchdowns last year and really got everyone’s attention. We’ll make sure and bring our ‘A’ game when we play them.”
